"Chowrasta" makes its way into Malaysia Book of Records

SHAH ALAM: Filmmaker Datuk Prof A Razak Mohaideen’s yet-to-be-released film Chowrasta has landed an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for the largest number of viewers in a single screening.

Razak’s new film is scheduled for release in cinemas nationwide on Dec 10.

“We are very happy that we have achieved this tonight, and I am also optimistic that it will be well-received once the film screens in cinemas by year end,” said the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Film, Theatre and Animation (FiTA) faculty dean.

Razak said this after organising a promotional screening of the film at the university’s Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor (DATC) last night, which saw an attendance of 4,416 guests.

The guests included the university’s pro-chancellor Tan Sri Arshad Ayub and vice-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.

Chowrasta is produced by National Film Studio in collaboration with FiTA, and it involved the participation of 25 lecturers and 60 students. The 105-minute long film was shot around Georgetown, Penang and Shah Alam over 32 days last year.

Chowrasta is based on Sahol Hamid’s book Mencorak Destini, a semi-autobiographical story of Hamid, an impoverished teenager from Georgetown who is encouraged to further his studies in engineering at Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM) by his mother and uncle. He also learns tomoi martial arts to toughen himself and face neighbourhood bullies, and eventually becomes a respected academician.

The film stars third year theatre student Che Amar Khamis a.k.a. Chem Amar and popular actors Datuk Rosyam Nor, Nora Danish, Aminah Rhapor, Fauzi Nawawi and Azhari Zain, among others.
