Shop owner fined over RM30k for illegal cigarettes, alcohol

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selayang Magistrate’s Court fined a grocery shop owner RM33,128.20 over illegally-imported contraband of 1990 packets of cigarettes and 888 tins of alcoholic drinks.

Magistrate Nurliana Ismail slapped S. Murugan with the fine today when he pleaded guilty to possessing the items.

The 40-year-old committed the offence involving the contraband worth RM3,312.82, at Pasar Mini Abirammi, Garing Utama, Rawang, around 7.45pm on June 17.

He was charged under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 which specified maximum penalty of fine 20 times the value of illegal items involved, imprisonment up to three years, or both.

Royal Malaysian Customs prosecuting officer Mohd Shafiq Abdul Aziz prosecuted while Murugan was represented by counsel S. Muthuveeran.
