KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Islamic and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) has distributed RM8.2 million to the poor and needy from tithes collected in the state this year.
Its president Datuk Shaikh Harun Shaikh Ismail said besides the needy, the department also gave aids to the saudara baru (new Muslims) who need to further their studies, conduct business or support their medical healthcare .
He said a total of 857 families of saudara baru statewide were given aids to ease their burden in the festive season.
"We gave RM300 for each of the families and some of them received between RM400 and RM700 depending on their needs," he told reporters after breaking of fast event with the saudara baru at TH Hotel in Kuala Nerus, yesterday.
He said Maidam would continue to provide assistance to the new Muslims.
