Two detained for growing, possessing cannabis

SEREMBAN: Two men were detained for planting cannabis and having in possession 50.25g of the drug at a house in Sikamat on Wednesday.

State police chief Datuk Jaafar Mohd Yusof said the duo, in their 30s, were picked up during a 11.15am raid after a tip-off.

“During the raid, we seized 5 cannabis plants of heights of between 11cm and 2m and dry cannabis leaves weighing 50.25g. The cannabis, which we believed had been planted six months ago, were growing openly outside the house.

“We believe that they were selling the drugs at RM2,500 a kilogramme in nearby districts,” he said at state police headquarters here today.

Present was state Narcotics Department chief Superintendent Ayub Salim.

Jaafar said the main suspect, who was unemployed, had a criminal record with four offences listed on it, adding that both men were ordered remanded for six days to facilitate investigations.

He said investigations the case was classified under section 6B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for planting cannabis, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a minimum of six strokes of the rotan.

“This was the second case related to growing cannabis in the state. In the first case, a Narcotics Department team nabbed an unemployed man in Seremban and seized eight cannabis plants,” he said.
