21 price controlled items for Hari Raya

PUTRAJAYA : The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has placed 21 items under the price control scheme for the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Its minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said the scheme will be in force for 17 days from July 7 to 23.

The controlled items for nationwide include live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken, local beef, imported buffalo meat, grade A,B and C chicken egg, red chilli, imported cabbage, tomato, whole coconut, grated coconut, shallot (India), imported onion, garlic (China), imported potato (China), mackerel and scad fish.

Imported beef will only be controlled in Sarawak while tuna will be controlled in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

Hasan said the scheme would be carried out in accordance with the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 during the festive season.

"The maximum price will vary depending on the area due to logistical reasons. About 2,100 enforcement officers from the ministry will be mobilised nationwide to monitor the situation during the period," he said at a press conference, today.

Aidilfitri is expected to fall on July 17.

Hasan warned traders that stern action would be taken against those who failed to observe the regulations under the scheme, including a fine of up to RM100,000 and imprisonment for individuals and a fine of up to RM500,000 or maximum compound of RM50,000 for companies.
