4-month-old suspected abuse victim still in coma

ALOR STAR: A 4-month-old toddler who suffered bleeding in her brain, allegedly due to abuse at a nursery in Taman Perdana, Sungai Petani, is still in a coma and in a critical condition.

Kedah health director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said further examination shows that the toddler, Putri Wafa Mohd Saifudin, who is currently being treated at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, has internal bleeding in both her eyes.

"A brain scan on the toddler shows that she is suffering bleeding in the brain, known as subdural haemorrhage.

"Other test and examination including X-ray however shows no other medical complications or injuries," said Norhizan.

Meanwhile, Kedah Criminal Investigation Department Chief ACP Mohd Nashir Ya said no arrests have been made so far and the police are investigating the case under Section 31(1)(a) Child Act 2001.

The toddler was admitted to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani last Wednesday (July 1) after she had seizures, before being referred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here on the same day for further treatment.
