Two-year-old boy dies, police detain adopted parents for questioning

MIRI: A two-year-old boy, believed to have been victim of abuse, died at the Miri General Hospital here early today.

The victim was unconscious when he was initially brought to a private hospital here by his adopted parents at 10pm on Thursday before his case was referred to Miri General Hospital’s intensive care unit the following day at midnight.

Doctors treating the victim suspected there were elements of abuse when the found multiple wounds and bruises around the boy’s face and body.

“Checks by doctors showed there were at least 12 burnt marks on the victim’s body. There were also several bruises found near the boy’s eyes, hands and legs.

“There were also signs indicating that the boy had fractured his right leg, which was undergoing natural recovery,” sources said adding that the victim was also suffering from lung infection.

The boy died about 24 hours after he was admitted at the Miri General Hospital.

Miri district acting police chief Superintendent Stanley Jonathan Ringgit confirmed the case and said the victim’s adopted parents had been arrested.
