Two-year-old among 32 foreigners detained in immigration ops

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department has detained 32 foreigners, including a two-year-old toddler, in a series of raids in the city centre and Kulai, here, yesterday.

The three-hour raids conducted at under operations "Selera" and "Sapu", saw 15 Myanmar nationals including three women, six Pakistani men, five Indian-national men, and a Filipino woman, detained.

Also detained were four Indonesians including the two-year-old's parents, and her aunt.

The department director Baharuddin Tahir said in a bid to curb mushrooming migrant colonies, a series of raids were conducted in hotspot areas where the foreigners were found working in eateries without valid working permits and overstaying in the country.

He said the foreigners had committed offences under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) for not possessing valid passes or permits to stay in the country and Section 15(1)(c) of the same act for overstaying.

Meanwhile, an Indian-national man was suspected of violating Section 56(1)(d) of the act for harbouring illegal immigrants.

The enforcement officers also issued nine individuals with notices to appear at the department's office to assist in their investigations.
