Penang Sessions Court frees Mat Sabu from defamation

BUTTERWORTH: Sessions Court freed former Pas deputy president Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu today from his charge with defamation against a policeman.

Sessions judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi said the prosecutiion had failed to prove a prima facie case against Mat Sabu.

He delivered the judgement and ordered Mat Sabu to be acquitted and discharged.

The courtroom was swamped by Pas supporters and they were elated by the favourable decision.

They shouted "Allahu Akhar" (God is great) upon hearing the verdict.

Mat Sabu is charged with allegedly defaming policemen who were killed in a communist attack at the Bukit Kepong police station in 1950.

He alleged said this during his speech in Tasek Gelugor, Penang on August 21, 2011 that the communists led by Ahmad Indera, who was better known as Mat Indera, were the true independence fighters in the Bukit Kepong incident that saw 25 policement and their families killed.

Mat Sabu thanked his legal team after stepping out from the court room.

The lawyers are Mohamad Hanipah Maidin, Aminuddin Zulkipli and Nasarkhan Mirbaskhan.
