Medan Renong sets new standard as Penang's first 100 per cent single-use plastic-free food court

PENANG: In a move towards environmental sustainability, Penang's Medan Renong Food Court has been inaugurated as the first 100 per cent single-use plastic-free food court in the state by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Penang Island City Council, in a Facebook post, said the renowned food court, known for its culinary delights, has now taken the forefront in spearheading Penang's eco-friendly initiatives.

The post also added how Penang Island mayor Datuk Anthony Rajendran highlighted the court as the administration's pilot project for eradicating single-use plastics. He also revealed plans to expand this eco-friendly initiative to other food courts.

Following a successful "Town Hall" session in September last year, where the mayor introduced this initiative, the trader community at Medan Renong unanimously supported the move, recognising its significance in reducing non-biodegradable waste.

"During the official visit, Chow observed the positive response from customers using paper straws and other eco-friendly alternatives.

This effort aligns with the Penang2030 Vision, aiming to establish a smart and green state that champions family-centric values and sustainability," said the Facebook post.

The Chief Minister, along with distinguished guests, toured the stalls, distributing caps and aprons to operators, recognising their essential role in this green transition.

He also announced the city council's plans to enhance visitor convenience at the court.

"It is hoped that the construction project, which costs almost RM1 million, can meet the needs of traders so that the problems faced by visitors, especially during rainy and hot weather, can be addressed while also bringing significant benefits and impact to Medan Renong," he was quoted as saying.
