Wangsa Walk brawl: Three men jailed and fined

KUALA LUMPUR: Three men were jailed one month and fined RM1,000 each over a brawl between two youth groups at Wangsa Walk Mall in Wangsa Maju last week.

Today magistrate Ashraf Rezal Abdul Manan handed down the sentence on Noor Afandi Jalaudin, 29, his brother Nor Azuan, 21, and Muhammad Fairus Estman Mat Rani, 21.

Afandi, Azuan, and Fairus were penalised when they pleaded guilty to injuring a 15-year-old boy during a fracas inside the security department's office at the mall here at 6.50pm on July 20.

Ashraf ordered the trio to serve their jail term from the date of arrest which was the day of the incident. He also ordered them to serve an additional one month's jail if they failed to pay the fine.

During today's proceedings, a 16-year-old boy also pleaded guilty to committing the same offence.

However, the court set his sentencing on Aug 25 to allow it to consider the Welfare Department's report on the underaged accused. He was granted RM1,000 bail with one surety.

Meanwhile at the same court, a jobless young man and three teenage boys were charged with rioting at the same place.

Muhammad Azwan Rafyudi, 19, and three teenagers aged between 14 and 15, as well as 16 others still at large were accused of rioting with wooden sticks, motorcycle locks, a wooden yellow signboard, steel rods and helmets.

Azwan claimed trial to rioting at the mall around 6.45pm on the same day.

However, the three teenagers pleaded guilty and the court set sentencing on Aug 25 to permit it to evaluate the young boys' Welfare Department report.

Ashraf set Aug 13 for mention of Azwan's case. He also allowed Azwan and the three teen boys RM1,000 bail with one surety each.

Deputy public prosecutor Raihanah Abd Razak prosecuted while counsel Tharamjit Singh acted for Azwan.

Earlier at the Sessions Court today, Azwan claimed trial to causing grievous injury to a 17-year-old boy at the mall. The boy remains unconscious at a hospital here.

He was alleged to have hit the victim with a wooden stick at the mall around 6.45pm on the same day.

Judge Azman Mustapha granted him RM6,000 bail with one surety and set Aug 13 for mention.

Between July 20 and 21, police detained 21 people in connection with the brawl between two groups of youth at the mall allegedly triggered when a 15-year-old boy confronted a man for dating his 13-year-old sister.

The brawl left five men injured, with injuries ranging from bruises to a fractured shoulder and broken neck.
