Three-day operation to weed out illegal immigrants in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) has handed over 124 illegal immigrants from here to Immigration department for deportation.

Esscom Chief of Staff (Special Investigation and Technical) SAC Rosli Mohd Isa said those immigrants were among 915 people screened during a three-day Ops Gasak which began on Thursday.

All of them were arrested near Sandakan Municipal council apartment, Kampung Mangkalinau and Kampung Melayu Batu.

“We have also confiscated a large amount of cables and wires at three squatter areas,” he said, adding the joint-operation also aimed to curb illegal power connection.

Recently, a fireman Apolos Jeromos, 25, died after being electrocuted by illegal connection while putting out bushfire at Taman Kenari, Batu 7, here.

The operation was also joined by personnel from Energy Commission, Syarikat Electricity Sdn Bhd, district municipal council, Immigration department, Water department and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
