UPDATE: Two Malaysians killed in Bangkok blast identified

PUTRAJAYA: The two Malaysians killed in the central Bangkok bombing yesterday have been identified, Wisma Putra said in a statement.

The duo are Lim Saw Gek and her son Neoh Jai Jun whose remains are currently placed at Police General Hospital in Bangkok for post mortem.

Two other Malaysians, identified as Tan Rui Hun and Tan Kim Siok, were also injured in the incident. Tan is currently admitted to Hua Chiew Hospital for further treatment, while Kim Siok was discharged earlier after receiving treatment.

The statement also said Wisma Putra, through the Malaysian embassy in Bangkok, was working closely with the local authorities in providing necessary consular assistance towards the victims and their families, involved in the incident.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to convey our deepest condolences and sympathy to the victims and their families involved in the incident.”

Thai national police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri said the death toll stood at 22 from the bombing, with 123 people wounded, news agencies reported.

A notice on the website of the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok this morning said three Chinese tourists were among the dead from the explosion and more than 20 others had been injured.

The Hong Kong government said two of its residents died, and it was not known whether China included those fatalities in its total.

The explosion at about 7pm (8 pm Malaysian time) yesterday, occurred at the Ratchaprasong intersection, near the famous Erawan Shrine and Bangkok’s colourful and high-street shopping.

Thailand's defence minister says investigators were getting closer to determining who set off the bomb, though he did not give further details.

"It is much clearer who the bombers are, but I can't reveal right now," Prawit Wongsuwan said earlier today.

"We have suspects. There are not many people." Prawit said, adding that Thai authorities had no intelligence on the attack before the blast.
