Ministry to help repair homes of the poor

JOHOR BARU: A programme by the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry to restore homes damaged by fires will be extended to include repairs for dilapidated homes of the poor.

Deputy Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Halimah Shadique said the ministry has decided to repair houses of the poor which are in shoddy condition and are a safety hazard under the My Beautiful Neighbourhood programme.

Since the programme began in 2012, 95 families have benefited from funding for home repairs. The repair works are conducted by agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department.

"The ministry will identify the homes of the poor for this new initiative. Each home owner in the peninsula will receive RM40,000 for repairs while home owners in Sabah and Sarawak will receive RM50,000," said Halimah after handing over a newly restored home of a fire victim in Kampung Sungai Tiram, Ulu Tiram, near here today.

Halimah said the allocation for the program will be RM1.27 million each year for all its efforts nationwide.
