Home Ministry to review police emoluments

KUALA LUMPUR: The government's move to review the salary structure of civil servants is expected to also include the review towards the emoluments received by police personnel.

This, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, was as the salary as well as allowances given to police personnel were still low and considered insufficient for those residing in the urban areas.

He added that a request had also been submitted to the Public Service Department (PSD) to review the matter.

"The government, alongside the ministry, are currently conducting a study on the salary structure for civil servants, including for police personnel which includes cost of living allowances.

"We realise that the rate (of emoluments) is low compared to the increasing cost of living, especially in major cities such as Kuala Lumpur.

"For example, the allowance (for cost of living) is provided based on their location, which ranges from RM200 to RM350 per month.

"Hence, the ministry has submitted a request to PSD to assess the matter," he said during the minister's question time in Dewan Rakyat, today.

Shamsul said this in response to Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) who enquired about the government's plan to increase the salary of police personnel following the uncertain economic situation.

At the same time, Shamsul also said that the ministry was constantly reviewing the basic salary received by police personnel and stressed that the salary received was not static.

This, he said, was as police receive emoluments which included basic salary, fixed allowances and other allowances given, based on tasks and expertise which exceeded the government's minimum salary threshold of RM1,500.

"They also receive a fixed housing allowance of RM300, a fixed public service allowance (RM115), a cost of living allowance of RM350, a service incentive payment (RM200) with a gross salary of RM2,404."

Meanwhile, he added that as of Jan 31, a total of 27 incentive payments and allowances were enjoyed by police personnel based on their duties and placements.

Among these included technical incentive payments ranging from RM100 to RM300, licensed ship maintenance allowance of RM1,050, pilot incentive payments ranging from RM2,000 to RM4,000, and general operations team incentive payments, he said.
