FAM looking to reform itself for future growth

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will set up an independent advisory committee to reform the sport's national governing body.

FAM president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said the committee will have a free-hand in making any recommendation to improve the governing of football in Malaysia.

"This committee will comprise individuals with experience in the administration of football but who are not involved with any state association or club," said Tengku Abdullah while chairing the FAM Congress here today.

"They should reassess FAM's administration and policies and the direction in which we are heading.

"If the recommendations that they make require amending our statutes, then so be it. We want Malaysian football to achieve excellence and regain it's pride of place in the world."

No other decisions were made at the annual congress, which took less than an hour to conclude.

Tengku Abdullah also voiced his concern over the recent performances of the national team, which has not won an international match in four outings this year.

"The performance of the national team worries me," he said. "State teams and clubs must give priority to release players for national duty.

"I hope the team will use the friendly against Bangladesh (on Saturday) to register their first win ahead of the two upcoming World Cup qualifying matches (next month)."

In a separate development, telecommunications provider TM signed a three-year agreement with Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership, the firm FAM set up to run Malaysian domestic football competitions, to sponsor the Malaysia Cup beginning with this year's edition.
