Turning speed demons into angels

ROAD safety campaigns, fines and the media publishing pictures of vehicles in horrific accidents have not left an impact on motorists.

Mild-mannered individuals become speed demons when they are behind the steering wheel.

Our roads have become killing fields, especially during festive seasons, and the recent Op Selamat 7 recorded 330 deaths, the highest ever. On average, 20 or more people die in road accidents every day.

There have been calls to resurrect the Kejara Demerit Points System, which was discontinued five years ago due to loopholes in its enforcement. It is a powerful system that can reduce traffic offences.

The fear of losing their driving licence can transform speed demons overnight.

In the earlier incarnation of the system, rich offenders who paid their summons within three months were not given demerit points. Hopefully, in the revised and transformed system, loopholes and discrepancies can be plugged.

Even if offenders pay within the time frame, they should be slapped with demerit points. Drivers should know the consequences of collecting demerit points.
