Stomping action is provocative, can spark racial riots says Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR: The Bersih 4.0 assembly can be viewed as an attempt by certain quarters to threaten the peace and divide the unity enjoyed within the multicultural landscape of Malaysia said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

“The actions of rally goers, who were predominately Chinese where some of them stepped on the pictures of the Prime Minister and pictures of a number of Islamic leaders, can be perceived as provocative and can spark racial riots such as the black tragedy of May 13 1969,” she said, in a statement here today.

She said the acts were an offence and they could be charge under the Sedition Act and they could be fined not exceeding RM5,000 or jailed for a term not exceeding 3 years, or both for the first.

For the second such offence, those charged could be fined not exceeding RM5,000 and the jail term does not exceed five years, or both.
