Cabinet yet to discuss Bersih's views on reform agenda, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet has yet to discuss the views expressed by electoral watchdog Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) on the government's reform agenda, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today.

Fahmi said the government, however, took note of Bersih's views.

"We take note of the statement and respect the views expressed. However, we have yet to discuss (the matter) at the cabinet level.

"Issues related to institutional reforms and other key matters must be addressed, and this is why the government has established a committee to examine the agenda and manifesto (of reformation) to be implemented.

"So I believe that issues expressed by non-governmental organisations will be taken into account, and the best platform to discuss these issues is through the committee chaired by Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli."

He said this after the cabinet meeting.

Earlier today, Bersih, together with civil rights groups and students and youth movements, said they were ready to hold a demonstration to urge the government to implement its reform agenda as promised.

Bersih chairman Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said this was because recent developments, especially involving the political elite, had given the impression that the pledges and commitments to reform remained mere promises.

He added that the reduction of the prison term and fine for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, for example, had raised concerns about whether the people's mandate would go to waste without structural reforms.
