Haze: Schools in Peninsular Malaysia closed for two days; except Kelantan

ALOR STAR: All schools nationwide except for Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak have been ordered to be closed on Monday and Tuesday due to worsening haze situation, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, here today.

Mahdzir said the ministry will continue to monitor the Air Pollutant index (API) readings in Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak for every hour and the same order will also be applied should the API reach the unhealthy level.

He said that the afternoon sessions for today in Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah would proceed and not cancelled.

“Those schools which were ordered to close due to the haze are not required to replace the classes,” he said when met at SMK Seri Ampang here after giving a lesson on climate change to 18 Form Four students of the school as part of the World's Largest Lesson (WLL) campaign.

Mahdzir added there will be no changes on the schedules of PT3 (Trial examination of Peperiksaan Menengah Rendah or PMR), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM).

"The examinations will run as scheduled despite the haze situation.

"The ministry however will assist the schools in providing the students with face masks,” he said.

The WLL campaign is a project in support of the of the United Nations' Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
