Haze: Universities, colleges can close if situation warrants

KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry has given all higher learning institutions (HLIs) the green light to postpone academic activities or close their respective institutions should the air pollution index (API) readings in their localities exceed safe levels.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, in a statement today, said the HLIs have been instructed to monitor the haze situation through various mechanisms, including API readings in their localities and also prepare internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines accordingly for the reference of their staff and students.

"All universities and HLIs, both public and private, are requested to monitor haze levels in their respective localities and can decide whether to postpone academic and non-academic activities or close their respective institutions," said Idris.

"The health and well-being of students and staff is to be of utmost priority," he added.
