TPP: Contents to be made public next month, Parliament tabling in two months

KUALA LUMPUR: The contents of the recently concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) negotiations will be made public next month.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said this will also include the completed cost benefit analysis.

“On October, 5, twelve trade ministers from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, USA and Vietnam had reached an agreement in Georgia.

“In a month’s time, the contents of this agreement will be made public. The cost benefit analysis will also be completed and announced,” said Mustapa in a Facebook posting today.

He said both items would be tabled in Parliament for debate within two months.

“Parliament will debate and decide on whether it will accept or reject the TPP.

“If Parliament agrees, Malaysia will have two years to ratify it, or alternatively reject it within the same period,” he said.

Pacific trade ministers had yesterday reached a deal on the TPP, described as the most sweeping trade liberalisation pact set to cut trade barriers and set common standards for the 12 countries, following five years of negotiations.

Mustapa in a statement last night, had said Malaysia had won several concessions from parties to the TPP, which took into consideration almost all of Malaysia’s concerns and sensitivities especially in the areas of government procurement, state-owned enterprises and Bumiputera issues.

He had stressed that Malaysia would never be party to an agreement that violated the nation's constitution or one that undermined the core policies instituted by the government to benefit the people.
