Special Parliament sitting to discuss TPP likely: Mustapa

PUTRAJAYA: There may be a special Parliament sitting to discuss the details of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), says International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

The text is currently being finalised and will be made available to the public in about 30 days.

The final document, together with two separate cost-and-benefit analysis prepared by the Malaysian Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) and PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia, will be presented to the Cabinet and Parliament.

“If the document is in by November, then it will be discussed in Parliament in early January,” he told a media briefing at Menara Usahawan here today.

Mustapa, who had arrived from the G20 trade ministers meeting in Istanbul, said Malaysia is happy with the overall TPP.

“We are happy with market access, recognition of Bumiputera issues and exemptions given to some state-owned enterprises.”

He said the negotiating team, led by chief negotiator Datuk J. Jayasiri, has done its best to protect Malaysia’s sensitive areas such as Bumiputeras, state-owned enterprises, medicine and the federal constitution.

The Cabinet has directed Mustapa to step up further public engagements to explain the TPP text.
