New LRT, Monorail fares before Oct 31: SPAD

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is expected to announce a review of the LRT and Monorail fares before Oct 31, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) said today.

Its chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said the Cabinet has approved the review.

"SPAD has written to the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) to ensure it is properly endorsed," he said after visiting the new Awan Besar LRT station.

Syed Hamid said the announcement will be made just before part of the first phase of the Ampang Line LRT extension project is expected to be opened to the public on Oct 31.

Syed Hamid, however, did not reveal the new rates.

Prasarana, which currently operates the Klang Valley's LRT and Monorail lines, has asked the government to raise the fares.

The first phase will see four of 11 new stations opened to the public by the end of the month - Awan Besar, Alam Sutera, Muhibbah and Kinrara BK5.

It is expected to add 40,000 commuters to the present 195,000 commuters using the Ampang line daily.

"We have completed 99.4 percent complete of the operations. The remainder is on test endurance which should be completed end of next week, " he said.

He said Prasarana is also looking at different types of monthly Rapid pass for its commuters for the extensions.

Commuters using the new LRT extension will see six car carriages plying the routes every three minute once during peak hours and every five minute ride during non peak hours.

The remainder of the line is expected to be completed next year, and will stop at the Putra Heights station, where commuters will be able to switch to trains on the Kelana Jaya Line.
