Nice to see Malaysian spirit in action

I REFER to your news report, “Kind souls come to aid of girl working in charcoal kiln” (NST, Sept 30).

I was touched when I read the initial article a week ago about 10-year-old Intan Maisarah Zulliazam. She is a gem of a girl to put her family's needs above her own.

It is good to know that many people contacted NST’s Kuantan office to enquire and offer assistance to Intan's family. That is the Malaysian spirit in action.

We are ever willing to help another in need.

The Kuantan Welfare Department has approved a monthly assistance of RM450 starting from the 15th of this month. And among the kind of aid promised by other Malaysians are groceries, school supplies, food, household items and cash.

Intan’s mother, Lizawati Mustafa, earns only RM800 a month as a sweeper. Besides Intan, there are four other children, and one of them is dyslexic.

I am sure these gestures of aid are a welcome relief to Lizawati and her children.
