DBKL to provide cabins for traders affected by Chow Kit market fire

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will provide cabin facilities to help businesses affected by fire at the Old Chow Kit Market here early today.

DBKL Socio-Economic executive director Datuk Normah Malik said it was understood that the fire had razed storage structures belonging to the traders.

“The destroyed stalls were mostly used as storage rooms and it is understood that only 10 traders were doing business at the affected area.

“We will provide the cabins to be used as temporary storage rooms,” she told reporters when met at the scene.

The cabins would be placed at a vacant lot near the market, she said without giving the number of cabins to be provided.

“For the 10 traders, we will provide vacant sites for them to do businesses at the market,” she said.

Normah said DBKL would start cleaning works at the area soon after the forensics team of the Fire and Rescue Department had completed their investigations.

“The cleaning works may take seven to 10 days,” she said.

In the 12.30am incident, about 40 stalls, selling among others dry goods and flowers, were destroyed in the fire.

No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. – BERNAMA
