KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court set Oct 19 to hear a bid by former Batu
Kawan Umno deputy division leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and
lawyer Matthias Chang Wen Chieh to be freed on bail over their
attempted state sabotage case.
Judge Datuk Mohd Azman Husin fixed the date during mention of the
matter in open court this afternoon.
Azman set the hearing date to allow the prosecution, led by deputy
public prosecutor Masri Ahmad Daud, to peruse the court documents
pertaining to the application by Khairuddin and Chang.
Counsel Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla acted for Khairuddin and Chang,
both having been charged at the magistrate's court with attempted
sabotage of Malaysia's economic and financial sector.
Around 10.30 am this morning, lawyers for Khairuddin and Chang filed
the application at the High Court for it to determine whether the
attempted state sabotage charge falls under the Security
Offences(Special Measures) Act 2012.
The issue has bearing on whether Khairuddin and Chang can be granted
bail as those charged for Sosma-linked offences are not granted bail.
The magistrate's court denied bail to the duo when they were charged
under Section 124L of the Penal Code yesterday.
Previously, Khairuddin was arrested at Duta Court Complex here on Sept
23 and subsequently detained under Sosma. Chang was held under Sosma
on Oct 8.
