Thai illegal immigrant shot at border fence

KANGAR: A Thai illegal immigrant was injured after being shot during an attempt to flee from Malaysian authorities at the border fence in Chuping earlier today.

It was learnt that the man was one of eight people trespassing the Malaysian border in a group when the General Operation Force (GOF) team spotted them at about 5am.

They panicked when they were spotted by the team. The group of illegal immigrants immediately fled back to Thailand via the perimeter fence which had been cut off.

State police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Shafie Ismail, during a press conference here today, said during the attempt to flee, one of the men was stuck to the fence wire and suddenly four gun shots were heard coming from the Thai side.

He said one of the shots hit the man who was left behind, injuring him on the buttocks.

Shafie however confirmed that the shot was not fired by the GOF team and the reason for the shooting was still being investigated.

The injured suspect is currently undergoing surgery at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Kedah.
