New agency to handle flood-related issues

KOTA BARU: A new agency to handle all the issues related with flood disaster will be set up to help the government in tacking the problem in future.

  Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said the agency under the Prime Minister's Department, is expected to be formed before the next monsoon season arrived.

  "The new agency will be placed under the National Security Council and once formed, the agency will be handling all the issues or problem arise from flood.

  "At the moment, we are in the middle of completing its final draft after it was brought to Cabinet last month," she told reporters after witnessing the preparation made by the state Welfare Department here today.

  Rohani said by setting up the new agency, the government's hoped to provide a better service to the people especially the flood victim.

  On flood, she said the ministry and also all the agencies under it especially the Welfare Department were ready to face the coming monsoon season.

  "The Welfare Department has identified more than 5,000 relief centres throughout the country which can accommodate at least 1,600 flood victims.

  "Apart from that, a total of 549 forward bases are set up to keep food supply and other necessities for flood victims," she said.
