Drug abuse spreading to remotes areas in Sarawak

KUCHING: Drug abuse is going to be a serious problem in Belaga, a remote town about 150km from Bintulu, if no immediate efforts are made by the authorities to curb the menace from spreading.

Belaga Assemblyman Liwan Lagang said the authorities should step up enforcement by conducting operations against drug traffickers and addicts.

He was quoted saying it in his speech when opening the “Connecting The Unconnected” at Uma Sambop, Belaga, last night.

The programme was organised by the Sarawak Information Department, which issued a statement on it today.

Liwan, who is Assistant Minister of Culture and Heritage, also touched on communication problems in Sarawak and urged the Communications and Multimedia Ministry to also provide telephone and Internet facilities for residents in remote areas.

Also present at the event were 47 senior officers and staff of the Information Department from Putrajaya and Sarawak, led by Information deputy director-general Datuk Jamilah Mohd Shahid. --Bernama
