Spike in drug arrests and seizures across Sarawak in 2023

MIRI: Sarawak has witnessed a notable rise in drug-related arrests, with the figures climbing from 9,092 in 2022 to 10,365 in 2023, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Specifically, in Miri, the arrests increased from 852 in 2022 to 1,098 in 2023, highlighting a growing concern in the region.

Dewan Negara president Datuk Mutang Tagal revealed that the total value of drugs seized surged dramatically from RM12,230,867 in 2022 to RM142,458,470.38 in 2023.

Addressing the issue during the Sarawak Drug Rehabilitation and Kenosis Student Dialogue Program held by Kenosis Sarawak in Miri, Tagal emphasised the need for a more profound approach to tackling drug abuse.

He pointed out that the majority of drug-related incidents occur in less visible areas such as villages, longhouses, and rural communities, indicating that reliance on statistical data alone is insufficient for understanding the full scope of the problem.

Tagal expressed concern over the severe impact of drug addiction on individuals and communities, noting the lengthy duration addicts often endure before seeking rehabilitation.

He stressed the importance of a holistic recovery approach, combining love, discipline, care, and expertise, to support individuals on their path to recovery from addiction.
