Mudslide on trunk route strands villagers

KARAK: The closure of Route 68 near Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Tinggi is stopping villagers from returning to their homes in Lentang and Bentong.

"My house is less than 10 minutes away using this road," said SK Bukit Tinggi security guard Shahari Amriy Kamal, 19.

However, he spent the last night at the school.

"Last night when my shift started the road was still open, but after my shift ended, I couldn’t return home," he said adding that the road was closed as early as 9am.

Villagers who exited the area cordoned by police are not allowed to enter it again for the time being.

Shahari said there were many small landslides in Lentang last year.

This may be a consequence of logging.

“From Lentang, people can see the trees on the hill have been cut,” he said.

Meanwhile, Meng Lee Choo, 45 said she will have to spend the night at her friend's house in Gombak tonight after she heard the toll-free road she used had been closed.

"I did not expect to be stranded after visiting my friend in Gombak this morning," she said.
