Journalists stranded at Orang Asli village rescued

GUA MUSANG: The three journalists who entered an Orang Asli settlement in Kuala Betis here, have been rescued after about six hours stranded due to the floods.

The three were Paya Linda Yahya of Berita Harian/Harian Metro, Aimuni Tuan Lah from Kosmo and Maisarah Ahmad from Bernama.

They were rescued by Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officers at about 4pm.

Paya Linda said she and her two friends went to SK Kuala Betis flood relief centre to interview Orang Asli people who were evacuated there.

"We arrived at the centre around 10am and immediately interviewed a few Orang Asli people.

"While taking their pictures, we realised the water level of Betis river overflowed its bank, causing the only bridge that we'll use to exit from the centre, to be inundated by floodwaters.

"The incident resulted in the bridge being closed to light vehicles," said the 37-year-old mother of four.

She said they were lucky that they were rescued by the officers using their lorry.

The APM officers brought them out safely, together with a few Orang Asli flood victims, she said.

Paya Linda said except for Aimuni's car that had to be left there, their equipment was safe.

"This was a scary experience for us.

"We would like to thank everybody, especially our families and friends for their prayers, as well as the APM officers," she said.
