Zahid in the dark over 'limited media coverage' directive for Umno general assembly

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he is in the dark over a directive to limit media coverage for the upcoming Umno General Assembly.

Asked on the issue, Zahid said reporters should direct all their related queries to secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

Zahid said he too, would speak to Tengku Adnan on the matter.

He said the issue of media coverage was not raised at last night’s supreme council meeting.

“It is outside our knowledge. I will ask him," he told reporters today.

Asked if the organisers would not be providing a big screen at the Putra World Trade Centre to screen the assembly proceedings, as is the norm, Zahid said he had yet to be informed.

Earlier today, Tengku Adnan had said the assembly, which will be held next month, would be a closed-door affair and off limits to the media.

He said the media would not be allowed in the vicinity of the assembly proceedings and that it would not be broadcast live at the venue.

This, he said, was to ensure that the media would not ‘spin’ or misinterpret the news.
