3,343 domestic violence cases in Malaysia since 2012

KUCHING: Malaysia recorded 3,343 domestic violence cases in four years’ time since 2012, with 2,528 involved women.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri said Selangor recorded the highest number, with 519 cases, followed by 429 cases in Johor and 402 cases in Kelantan.

"There are a total of 166 cases in Sarawak but we can't compromise violence in our society, especially domestic violence involving women and children," she said.

The statistic based on the police reports from 2012 to August this year had shown that majority of the victims were between the ages of 26 to 35, she added.

Speaking at the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women walk here, Nancy said in Malaysia, the country recognised the roles played by the women community, who had contributed towards the nation's economy and wellbeing.

"Malaysia is committed to look after the women's rights and to ensure they are protected from violence," she said.
