Public relations plays an even more crucial role today: Salleh

KUALA LUMPUR: Public relations (PR) today have more dynamic roles in shaping reputation and a catalyst for sustainability, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

Salleh said in times of uncertainties, trust and reputation were two fundamentals that would become the organisation's pillars for sustainable and future growth.

"The world today continues to go through a high degree of uncertainty. Southeast Asia continues to be impacted by global issues. Public opinion remains central to shaping the reputation and being a catalyst for sustainability.

"Depending on their priority and creativity, PR professionals will choose certain methods and tools to fulfill their duties. Some tend to be most adept at using the media and PR to achieve their objectives, others may use campaigns," he said in his speech during the inaugural ASEAN PR Excellence gala night yesterday.

Also present were Institute of Public Relations Malaysia president Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, Asian Public Relations Academy Malaysia chairman Tan Sri M. Kayveas and Business Ethics Institute of Malaysia chairman K. Haridas.

At the event, Sarawak Tourism Board was crowned the overall champion for its submission on Rainforest World Music Festival Kuching.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall bagged silver for its submission on Kuala Lumpur Orchid and Bonsai Show 2015 and World Communication (M) Sdn Bhd won bronze for its ASEAN International Film Festival & Awards.

The award categories were Media Relations, Crisis Management, Event Management, Public Relations Campaign, Corporate Social Responsibility, Public Relations Ethics @ Work and Exemplary Public Relations Professional (Individual).

The awards, the first of its kind in the region highlighted the best achievement of public relations work by organisations. A total of 17 awards in seven categories were presented.
