High alert in Malaysia following IS threat on Thailand

SERDANG: Police are on alert following recent reports that Islamic State (IS) militants are planning terror attacks in Thailand.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police have stepped up security to avoid any untoward incidents and are wary of the IS threats.

"We do not want these people (IS militants) to stay here as it will also endanger the country and the people.

"Our neighbour (Thailand) is on alert and we can't escape from that. We will work together with Thailand to keep us updated on the IS threats in the region," he told a press conference after closing the ceremony of Open Endurance Championship in conjunction with the Federal Reserve Unit's 60th Anniversary at Bukit Ekspo, Universiti Putra Malaysia here today.

Khalid was commenting on reports quoting Thailand police confirming a leaked police memo on such attacks in the kingdom.

On a separate note, Khalid said police would summon the organisers of the Women's World Squash Championship, who had claimed that the postponement of the event was due to safety reasons.

"I don't understand the organisers. They never asked me on the safety issue in our country and blatantly accused us of being unsafe.

"Recently, we were host to foreign delegations including world leaders for the Asean Summit and Related Summits, all of which went smoothly. We will call them to investigate this issue," he added.
