Johor Causeway gridlock woes continue

JOHOR BARU: The Causeway Link congestion began to spiral as early as 7am today with many motorists entering the Woodlands Checkpoint.

As the congestion built up, those fed up with the gridlock decided to walk the 3km stretch along the bridge to the checkpoint entry, which is prohibited by law.

A snake-like trail of people comprising those working in Singapore had to make the trek to the Woodland Checkpoint, where another long queue awaits.

Checks however showed that traffic involving regular vehicles entering Johor was smooth as there were few motorists entering the Sultan Iskandar Customs and Immigration Quarantine complex checkpoint.

Johor public safety and traffic police chief superintendant Baharudin Mat Taib said the situation on the Johor Baru side was manageable.

"We have stationed five traffic policemen along the Causeway to manage incoming traffic to Johor Baru," he said.

He said two additional traffic police squads comprising five personnel each will be patrolling the city to monitor the traffic situation.

"The traffic police will be issuing summonsea to those who obstruct traffic at main roads leading to the Causeway and around JB Sentral so as to avoid any untowards congestions," he said.
