Beaches, waterfalls to be monitored: Shahidan

ARAU: The Civil Defence department has been directed to monitor beaches and waterfalls in an effort to prevent drowning incidents.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said he issued the directive after five family members drowned in Terengganu recently.

He also said that parents and guardians should exercise caution when allowing their children to bathe in these areas.

“All state governments should consider measures to prevent cases of drowning because these areas come under their jurisdiction,” he said after distributing school aid at an event organised by the Arau Wanita Umno here.

Shahidan, who is the MP for Arau, was also asked about the death of a silat exponent who was fatally stabbed during a demonstration at a wedding in Labuan last Saturday.

He said silat exponents should not use real keris (daggers) during demonstrations or mock duels.

“I ask silat exponents in Perlis to replace the real keris with imitations during demonstrations. This is important to avert accidental stabbings,” he said. --Bernama
