Tomyam restaurant owner and wife attacked by 40 people on New Year's Day

GEORGE TOWN: A couple was seriously injured after they were attacked on New Year's Day by a group of 40 men, as an act of revenge.

In the 2.15am incident, Mayusoh Epong was at his house at Taman Tunas Muda here, when a group of 40 men barged into the house via his restaurant, which was connected to the home.

The mob then proceeded to assault Mayusoh, his wife and three workers with helmets and chairs.

The group of men then fled from the scene with some RM15,000 worth of jewellery and cash, after injuring the victims.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Lai Fah Hin said the five victims were taken to the hospital.

Lai said Mayusoh is a Thai national married to a local, and had been operating the eatery for the past two years.

"Mayusoh said he knew some of the suspects and identified them as residents of Sungai Ara here," he told reporters here today.

He said one reason for the incident was a previous fight between one of the suspects and Mayusoh's worker.

"It was learnt that some of suspects had been to the restaurant and had ended up fighting with the workers when their drinks arrived late.

"Mayusoh believed that the suspects brought a group of men to attack them as revenge," he said.

"So far, 14 men have been arrested and they will be remanded to facilitate investigation," he said adding that the case would be investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code.
