Toddler coma case: Childcare centre staff released on bail

ALOR STAR: A 37-year-old childcare centre staff who was remanded for four days after allegedly neglecting a child under her care was released today under police bail.

Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Abdul Rahim Abdullah said police are still waiting for the medical report of the three-month-old toddler from the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital where he has been receiving treatment since January 11.

"We are still waiting for the medical report of the child before proceeding to charge her based on the directive given by the deputy public prosecutor," said Rahim.

The suspect, who is one of three staff working at the daycare centre, was arrested by police last Tuesday at around 3pm following a report made by the toddler's father on January 11 after he fell into a coma while being taken care of by the centre.

It is learnt that the toddler's parents had sent their son to the centre for just nine days before the incident took place.

In an earlier report, the father, Ashraf Abdullah, had received a phone call from the daycare centre's staff on Monday, insisting that he pick up his child as the baby had a fever and was acting up.

Finding his baby in weak condition, with bruises and marks on his head, Ashraf immediately brought the child to a private medical centre here.

The baby was then transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) in Alor Star due to his serious condition.

A CT scan at the hospital later revealed that there was bleeding in his brain.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect.
