Armed Forces ready to deploy to tackle IS threat: Hishammuddin

GENTING HIGHLANDS: The armed forces is ready to deploy its personnel to Islamic State (IS) target areas in the country upon receiving a directive from the National Security Council (NSC).

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein said the armed forces had been working closely with the police in monitoring terrorism threats in the country.

"The IS phenomenon is different from other terror groups such as Al-Qaeda, Jemaah Islamiah and individuals such as Nordin Mat Top.

"We need to conduct a more thorough and detailed study on combating them. This issue could also be discussed at the NSC level chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak," he said, noting that combating IS was not something the country or other top nations had successfully resolved.

Hishammuddin was speaking at the last day of the ministry's retreat session here today.

Also present was Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin.
