KOTA KINABALU: A coal-fired power plant in Tarakan, Kalimantan is expected to feed power to Tawau district here if a proposed grid materialises under the proposed Malaysian - Indonesian energy tie up.
Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili however said both government have yet to sit down and discuss the proposal in detail, but the suggested capacity of the plant would be between 150 to 200 Megawatts.
"This is one of three projects for Malaysia and Indonesia in the cross-border trading of energy under the Asean energy grid.
"The project will assist in building up Sabah's power margin to 25 percent in five to seven years time. Currently we have about six to eight percent margin which means we need to do rationing every time there is a breakdown of a power plant or utility," he told reporters after launching the Cultural Village exhibition by United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu at Likas Sports Complex hall, here.
On the update of the 380 Megawatt gas-fired power plant project in Sandakan, he said they were still shortlisting
companies. A decision is expected to be made sometime next month.
