SEMPORNA: The Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is proposing to build a market known as ‘Pasar Sejahtera’ (Prosperity Market) as a new tourist attraction in Semporna.

Its secretary-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek said the construction of the first market of its kind in Malaysia would be modeled after the Victoria Market in Melbourne, Australia.

“Pasar Sejahtera does not only sell fish, fruits and vegetables but also various goods. The market will also have shops selling apparels and souvenirs as well as restaurants which could attract tourists,” he said.

He was speaking at the launch of the school recycling clubs in Semporna today.

According to him, the proposal would also take into consideration the security of visitors by incorporating the elements of security and development programme (Kesban) in the construction of the market.

“To build the market, KPKT would gather the views of security agencies so that it has the same elements of Kesban used to combat the communists in the past,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohammad said in its plans KPKT would ensure Semporna town would be more organised and equipped with various facilities as well as being free from of rubbish.

“We are also proposing to build more organised towns as we are aware of the congestion in towns in Semporna district,” he said. --Bernama
