MARANG: More than 500,000 vehicles are expected on the trunk roads and highways in Terengganu within a five day period starting today.
Following that, 21 accident prone stretches on main roads and highways here will be monitored to ensure road users follow traffic rules during the Chinese New Year holiday period.
"Our patrol cars will move along with the traffic in Ops Selamat 8.
Our men will not remain static and we will have speed traps in each of the eight districts," state police chief Datuk Rosli Ab Rahman said today.
He said 460 traffic policemen would be involved in the operation, making their presence felt on danger stretches and monitoring traffic flow to avoid congestion.
Rosli said among the danger stretches include KM10 to KM32 near Sungai Ikan Kuala Terengganu-Kota Baru road and KM6 to KM11 near Jalan Sultan Mahmud in Kuala Terengganu, and in Besut at KM98 to KM14 near Kg Renek to Jabi, KM2 to KM20 near Kampung Gong Medang and Kg Padang Luas.
He said the two stretches in Dungun are KM72 to KM 75 near Kampung Pulau Serai and KM91 to KM102 near Kampung Nyior and Paka.
In Kemaman, six danger stretches were identified along the trunk road at KM14 and KM18 near the MPK junction near Kampung Pasir Gajah, at KM153 to KM170 near the Mak Lagam traffic light and KM158 to KM170 near Chenih Jalan Jerangau Jabor.
"Three stretches near LPT2 are KM247 to KM260 Perasing, KM290 to KM298 near Kijal and KM302 to KM319 near Seri Bandi, which have also been identified as dangerous stretches," he said after the launching of Ops Selamat 8, by State Health, Women's Development family and Community Committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Pehemi Yusof at Kampung Kelulut.
Rosli said four stretches in Setiu which had been identified were KM41 to KM44 near Rhu Tapai, KM73 to KM75 near Kampung Fikri, KM62 to KM68 near Chalok and Pak Kancil and KM82 to KM84 near Kampung Bintang.
He said three stretches in Marang were at KM 12 near Kampung Rusila, KM18 to KM80 from Rhu Muda to Kampung Jambu Bongkok and KM15 to KM28 near Kampung Bukit Sawa and Kampung Wakaf Tapai.
Finally, in Hulu Terengganu, the danger stretch is at KM 410 to KM411 near Sungai Ular ( LPT2).
