Police start publishing daily road accident data

KUALA LUMPUR: Police recorded 1,999 accidents and 12 fatalities nationwide yesterday.

The Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department revealed these numbers on its social media pages today.

The move kicks off a police effort to publish by 2pm every day the accident statistics of the previous day.

Department director Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said police wanted to publish the data to raise awareness among road users of the seriousness of daily road accidents.

He urged all road users to always follow traffic rules and laws.

"Every day, statistics on road accidents and deaths from the previous day will be released.

"We hope for cooperation from the public to boost awareness of the importance of maintaining road safety to reduce road accidents in our country," he said.

Earlier this month, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said police would reveal road accident data daily to increase awareness about the high number of road fatalities.

He said road accidents were the fourth-highest cause of deaths in Malaysia, recording 6,443 deaths last year.
