Some 400 evacuated after floods hit Malacca

MALACCA: Some 400 residents in Alor Gajah Melaka Tengah and Jasin districts were evacuated to 11 flood relief centres after their homes were affected by floods.

A Social Welfare Department spokesman said eight relief centres were opened for 99 families as of 4pm yesterday.

"Seri Pengkalan in Alor Gajah was the worst hit area where a total of 69 families were evacuated.

"Eight relief centres were opened at SMK Sri Pengkalan, Surau Bukit Tambun, Balai Raya Bukit Balai, SK Belimbing Dalam, Balai Raya Gadek, Surau Sri Cahaya in Tebong and a reading room in Taman Seri Bayu.

As of 4pm, 385 residents were still seeking refuge at eight relief centres here.

In Jasin, areas affected were in Simpang Bekok and Sungai Dua, resulting in 29 residents evacuated to communty centres in Balai Raya Asahan, Balai Raya Pekan and Balai Raya Taman Kasturi Simpang Bekoh.

Meanwhile, in the Melaka Tengah district as of 7pm, 112 victims from 28 families were forced to evacuate to Masjidul Rahman, Tanah Merah in Kerubong.
