Floods in Sarawak worsen, but expected to improve in next few days

KUCHING: The flood situation in the southern part of the state continued to worsen, with more people being evacuated from their houses this morning.

Deputy state secretary Datuk Misnu Taha said the number of flood evacuees had increased from 617 people last night to 2,685 people as of 10.30am today.

Misnu, who is also Sarawak Natural Disaster Committee deputy chairman, said 20 temporary relief shelters in Kuching and Bau had been activated today, compared to only five yesterday.

He said rescuers anticipated that the floods would continue to worsen when the high tide occurs between 5pm and 7pm today.

“We have prepared to face all consequences. We also hope those living in flood-prone areas will follow advice of the authorities,” he said after chairing the committee’s meeting in Petra Jaya near here.

The high tide, said Misnu, was also expected to occur tomorrow morning and the next few days.

However, Misnu was optimistic that the flood situation would improve soon, since only light rain is expected in the state from tomorrow until Friday.

“We hope there will be clear weather for the next few days, and that flood will recede soon.”
