IPOH: Children with disabilities have their own talent and capabilities just like normal children and realise their potential if given the opportunity to so.
Understanding this very well, the Batang Padang District Education Office in Tapah near here, has taken the initiative by introducing bakery classes for 26 special education students, aged 13 to 19, at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Slim River.
The school’s principal, Zuraidah Ahmad Zaiti said the classes introduced last July were held every Wednesday and involved two teachers.
“They are taught to bake one menu a day, so that they can understand easier. They learn how to bake bread, peanut and sausage breads and also muffins.
“Not all the students have the ability to bake bread. Only eight female students can bake, while the male students only help them. The Down Syndrome students are only involved in promotion work and selling the items in school,” she told Bernama.
Zuraidah said the income from the selling of the bread could be used to increase the project funding and at the same time, would be used to buy the bread baking equipment.
Meanwhile, Aggel Sarilatun Arpan, 19, said she was happy to learn how to bake bread with her friends.
“At first, I did not understand. But with the help from the teachers, now I already know how to bake bread,” said the Orang Asli student who has learning disabilities. --Bernama
