'Learn how to check fish quality'

KOTA KINABALU: Consumers in Sabah are spoilt for choice when it comes to seafood.

The industry thrives in the state as its vast coastal line is dotted with fishing communities.

But, whether or not consumers get supplies of seafood that are good value for money depends on their knowledge.

Sabah Consumer Affairs and Protection Society president James Baga said consumers could make the most of their money through better awareness of the options available and some legwork to make comparisons at different retail outlets.

“The prices of fish vary and supermarkets, despite having higher prices, are good options because of the quality of their supply. Such establishments are normally stringent in their quality control to safeguard their reputation,” said Baga.

However, it was important for consumers to know what they were buying and learn simple methods of checking the quality of fish.

“Markets, too, are good (places to purchase fish). But, this is where consumers need to know what they are buying, because there are fishmongers who lace their supply with preservatives.

“Then comes the price watch, where consumers should make comparisons of the prices. There are those who don’t mind paying more, but it would not hurt if they are aware of the options.”

Discerning consumers could also help keep middlemen in check if they hike up prices too high, Baga added.
